3 Easy Ways To Care for Your Silk

  • Hand Wash
  • Machine Wash (with silk wash bag)
  • Dry Clean

Hand Wash

Here’s a step-by-step guide for hand washing silk:

1. Fill a Basin: Use a clean basin or sink, filling it with cold or lukewarm water.

2. Add Detergent: Add a small amount of mild, silk-specific or gentle detergent. Swirl to mix it evenly in the water.

3. Submerge the Silk: Place the silk item in the water, fully submerging it.

4. Swish Gently: Gently move the silk around in the water for 2-3 minutes. Avoid wringing, scrubbing, or twisting the fabric.

5. Rinse with Clean Water: Drain the soapy water and refill the basin with clean, cold water. Swish the silk around to rinse out the soap. Repeat if needed until the water runs clear.

6. Optional Vinegar Rinse: For added shine, add 1/4 cup of white vinegar to the rinse water and swish gently. Rinse with fresh water afterward.

7. Remove Excess Water: Lift the silk out of the water carefully. Lay it flat on a clean towel, then roll up the towel with the silk inside, pressing gently to remove excess water. Avoid twisting or wringing.

8. Air Dry: Lay the silk flat on a dry towel or hang it up to air dry away from direct sunlight.

Washing Machine (with silk wash bag)

1. Place in Washing Bag: Fold the silk item gently and place it inside a mesh laundry bag or silk washing bag to protect it.

2. Add Detergent: Use a small amount of mild detergent designed for delicate fabrics or silk.

3. Set Machine to Delicate: Choose the delicate or hand-wash cycle on your washing machine. Ensure the water temperature is cold or lukewarm.

4. Avoid Spin Cycle: If possible, turn off the spin cycle or set it to a low spin to minimize stress on the fabric.

5. Start the Wash: Begin the cycle, letting the machine wash the silk gently.

6. Remove Promptly: Once the cycle finishes, take the silk item out of the bag immediately to prevent wrinkles.

7. Press Out Excess Water: Place the silk on a clean towel, then roll up the towel with the silk inside and press gently to remove excess water. Avoid wringing or twisting.

8. Air Dry: Lay the silk flat on a dry towel or hang it to air dry away from direct sunlight.

Dry Clean

Our silk products are usually not dry cleaned; instead, they are typically hand-washed or machine-washed on a delicate cycle. Regular washing is necessary for pillowcases to keep them fresh and free from oils and skin products. Washing silk pillowcases gently with cold water and a mild detergent is generally enough to preserve their softness and sheen.

However, there are a few instances where you might choose to dry clean silk pillowcases:

Stubborn Stains: If the pillowcase has tough stains or residue that regular washing can’t remove, dry cleaning may help lift them without damaging the silk.

Specially Finished or Embellished Silk: If the pillowcase has any embellishments or unique finishes, dry cleaning could help protect those details.

Personal Preference: Some people choose to dry clean silk items to ensure they maintain a polished look and avoid any risk of washing wear.
